Mortality among workers exposed to ethylene oxide. 16-year average follow-up of over 18,000 workers.

چکیده
Ethylene oxide is a highly reactive epoxide gas and a direct alkylating agent with chemical properties that make it a potent mutagen and a potential human carcinogen.4 It has been used commercially in the United States since the 1950s for sterilization of medical supplies, pharmaceutical products, and spices. NIOSH estimates that 270,000 workers may be exposed annually, with high levels of exposures occurring in perhaps 120,000 hospital and industrial workers.

Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Swedish Sterilant Workers Exposed to Ethylene Oxide: Updated Cohort Study Findings 1972–2006
OBJECTIVES To assess whether cancer incidence, mainly from lymphohaematopoietic tumours and breast cancer, and mortality were increased in a cohort of Swedish sterilant workers exposed to low levels of ethylene oxide (EtO), updated with 16 more years of follow up. METHODS The mortality and cancer incidence 1972-2006 experienced by a cohort of 2,171 male and female workers employed for at leas...
متن کاملMortality among workers exposed to ethylene oxide.
BACKGROUND Ethylene oxide is a sterilant gas that causes leukemia and other cancers in animals. Studies in Sweden have shown an excess of leukemia and stomach cancer in humans exposed to ethylene oxide, but other studies have generally failed to confirm these findings. METHODS We conducted a study of mortality in 18,254 U.S. workers exposed to ethylene oxide at 14 plants producing sterilized ...
متن کاملCancer mortality among municipal pest-control workers.
OBJECTIVES This epidemiological study was carried out in order to investigate the hypothesis of a relationship between cancer occurrence and occupational exposure in a population of municipal pest-control workers exposed to a wide range of pesticides and other chemicals. METHODS The study was designed as a mortality historical cohort study. The cohort comprised all subjects ever employed in a...

OBJECTIVES We conducted a 6-year cohort study to evaluate the relationship between carbon disulfide (CS2) exposure and reductions in the motor and sensory nerve conduction velocity (MCV and SCV) of the median nerve. METHODS Study subjects at baseline included 432 exposed workers and 402 unexposed workers. Among the exposed workers, 145 workers terminated CS2 exposure during the follow-up peri...
متن کاملMortality of workers exposed to ethylene oxide: extended follow up of a British cohort.
AIMS To obtain further information about the risks of cancer associated with occupational exposure to ethylene oxide METHODS Follow up was extended by 13 years for a cohort of 2876 men and women with definite or potential exposure to ethylene oxide in the chemical industry or in hospital sterilising units. Subjects were traced through National Health Service and social security records, and t...
